All About the Seahorse S33 Kontiki:

The Seahorse™ S33 Kontiki Is the Next Generation Of Kontiki Fishing Systems.
The original Seahorse S30 Kontiki was developed to be compact and lightweight. The new S33 has kept these features and now includes increased performance, distance and improved steering. There is a new control unit with integrated autopilot and GPS tracker. The Kontiki is controlled by an App that will run on Android or Apple phones.

The Seahorse S33 Kontiki is the lightest Kontiki available while maintaining the excellent performance expected from a Seahorse Kontiki. The S33 has a 30lb thrust motor and a cut-down two-blade propeller. The effective black lithium battery enables the motor to produce nearer 33 lb of thrust, giving a 10% increase over lead acid batteries. This makes the S33 a very versatile Kontiki, but it will struggle in rougher, bigger surf and currents on some West Coast beaches.

The S33 has been designed to be compact and lightweight. The Kontiki separates into two parts 600mm long, making for easy storage in a Motorhome or in the family car. Connected together, the S33 is 1.2 metres long. This length improves directional stability and seakeeping abilities. It allows better placement of the motor and positioning of the rudder. The rudder is further forward, giving more turning power, and this allows the Kontiki to hold a better course.

The catch and hinge have been designed to give a wide, stable connection between the body and tail. The two latches are used to hold the Kontiki closed. This reduces the load on the latches and spreads the pressure applied to the seal more evenly over the whole seal. The seal has a locating groove. This allows the sealing ridge of the body to have a larger sealing surface, ensuring a waterproof seal. The tail of the S33 Kontiki has been designed to allow the thrust from the motor to pass cleanly below the body of the Kontiki. The wide whale tail gives stability, enabling the S33 to stand on the beach or in the garage. The wide tail also allows the towpoint to be offset to counter the torque pull of the motor.

The design of the S33 body is a development of the continuous line of Seahorse Kontikis since 2001. Each has been a development of the knowledge gained from the previous designs, which has been adapted for the requirements of the newly available technology. The S33 combines the best of Kontiki design, GPS technology, cellphone communications and lithium batteries.

The Chisel bow allows the S33 to cut through the waves smoothly. The high conning tower houses the control unit, the GPS receiver, and the cell antenna to maximise their ability to communicate. The handle is narrow and comfortable to use. In many ways, the Seahorse S33 has the performance of a larger Kontiki.

Batteries:

The Seahorse S33 will operate using a single lithium battery. There are many different types of lithium batteries with different chemistry, producing different voltages and discharge rates. The Seahorse batteries have been designed to maximise performance while meeting the Kontiki’s current draw demands.

The Black lithium battery is the standard battery for the Seahorse S33. It has been developed to cope with the special requirements of Kontiki fishing. These lithium batteries supply approximately 10% more power than Lead-Acid (SLA) batteries, meaning the motor will produce 10% more thrust. The Black lithium battery will run the Kontiki for up to 25 minutes, and it is suitable for most users.

GPS Tracking and Telemetry System:

Seahorse has built the GPS tracker into the heart of the Kontikis Control Unit, meaning if someone steals your Seahorse Kontiki, it cannot be removed without destroying the Kontiki itself. Existing stand-alone trackers can be found and removed from the Kontiki. The built-in backup battery gives many hours of extended tracking after disconnecting the main battery.

In addition to transmitting the GPS tracking location from the Kontiki, the Control Unit also transmits the Kontiki’s performance telemetry back to the main server. This includes the Kontiki’s speed and direction, voltage and current drawn from the batteries, and other information allowing a Seahorse technician to review the Kontiki’s performance.

GPS Tracking and Telemetry data capture are only possible with a GSM Cellular (cellphone) network connection. The cellular connection allows the position and data to be transmitted from the Kontiki to the cloud and back to the App on your phone. It also enables commands such as STOP to be sent from the App via the Cloud to the Kontiki. If the Kontiki or your phone does not have a cellphone connection, this communication cannot happen.

It is possible to change the status of the Kontiki to lost or stolen. The lost mode will minimise power usage to maximise the time the GPS tracker can work and provide tracking information. As with all trackers, it can only work on the surface and the Kontiki will need to be within cellphone coverage. You will also need cellphone coverage where you are, and mobile data turned on to receive the information. The stolen mode will activate the GPS tracker to report and disable your Kontiki so that no one can operate it. The GPS location should assist the police in recovering the Kontiki, and once it is recovered, you can re-activate it so you can go fishing.

With the App, we can link you to your Kontiki, meaning only you and no one else (unless you share them) will have access to these advanced features. If the Kontiki is jointly owned, then the other owners can be added to the Kontiki, and they will have access to the advanced features. If you allow someone to borrow your new S33 Kontiki, they can download the App, access the basic start/stop and set the time in five-minute intervals. If you feel generous, you can share the advanced features with them. Afterwards, you can remove their access.

Seahorse will continuously update and improve the performance and features available. As new ideas and developments come online, Seahorse will be able to send updates directly to your Kontiki to ensure it is always operating with the latest software and features.

If you sell or dispose of your S33 Kontiki, the new owner’s details can be entered into the App, and the Seahorse records can be updated.

GPS Autopilot:

The GPS-controlled Autopilot system is a development of the earlier Seahorse autopilot systems. The improved hardware gets a faster and more accurate position lock. The improved steering algorithms have improved the directional stability and the ability to hold a course towards the waypoint.

The course is set by starting the motor on the beach and walking approximately 10 metres in the direction you wish the Kontiki to travel in. The GPS Autopilot system will calculate the direction you are walking and set a waypoint 3 km out in that direction. At that stage, the rudder will centre itself (because you are moving in the correct direction), and this is confirmation that the course is set. There will also be a status update on the App to Active.

Once the Kontiki is launched, the GPS Autopilot will steer the S33 Kontiki towards the waypoint. If a current tries to pull the Kontiki along the beach, the GPS Autopilot will turn the S33 Kontiki into the current so it stays heading towards the waypoint. Once the run is complete, the GPS Autopilot will turn off, and the rudder will be held in a central position to minimise its chances of damage.

Subscription for the Advanced Features:

Every new Seahorse S33 Kontiki comes with six months of free access to the advanced features from the date of purchase. After that, there is a small annual subscription to cover running the tracker and central server costs. The payment is done by credit card via the Seahorse App on your phone.

If you let the subscription lapse or have been cancelled, the advanced features can be reconnected in the future, but this involves a reconnection fee.

WINCH DETAILS:

The Seahorse Braid Winch is powered by a 150-watt motor (like our other Seahorse™ winches) and uses an 11.4AH Lithium battery. Due to the Braid line and the low-drag design of the Seahorse S30 Kontiki, this battery can retrieve the Kontiki unit up to three times on one battery. We have made the Winch simple with a soft-start three-speed control unit, ensuring full power is delivered to the motor no matter what. We have retained the Pulse function, allowing you total control over the Winch whenever needed.

There are 1500 metres of 140kg/300lb breaking strain Dyneema non-stretch braid, which is only 1.2mm in diameter. It is constructed from 8 strands, meaning if one strand is broken, the other 7 will take the strain. We place ½oz (20 grams) weights every 100 metres along the line to ensure the mainline is held on the bottom and to resist pulling the line by side currents.

Because the Dyneema braid is non-stretch, Seahorse can build everything lighter and smaller, making the winch easier to carry. The small disadvantage is that being lighter, it is more likely to be pulled down the beach by big fish. Simply sit on the winch or stake it to the ground, and the problem is solved.

WHY IS THE SEAHORSE™ BRAID WINCH SO DIFFERENT TO EVERYTHING ELSEWHERE?
The simple answer is technology moves on.

Since 2002, when the first Seahorse™ electric Winch was designed, two significant developments have occurred. The first is a non-stretch Dyneema braid, and the second is Lithium batteries. We have all seen the changes in rod-and-reel fishing since the introduction of Dyneema Braid, and thankfully, our mobile phones have gotten smaller thanks to lithium batteries.

While sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries and monofilament nylon line are still great products, the monofilament has the disadvantage of weight and stretch. By moving to Dyneema Braid and Lithium batteries, we have moved to the next generation of Kontiki Winches. These changes will change the way we Kontiki fish, plus they will open up new and exciting ways to use your Seahorse™ Kontiki products.

The Seahorse Braid Winch is lighter, approximately half the weight of a traditional electric Winch, and approximately half the size. This means it’s easy for one person to carry, and it will fit into smaller spaces. You no longer need a big quad bike to carry your fishing gear. But you might need it to carry all your fish home.

• The Dyneema braid is constructed from eight individual strands, meaning if one is broken, the other seven will take up the strain. If the line is damaged, simply cut out the damaged section and tie it together with a double or back-to-back uni knot, and you are back fishing.
• All the wiring is done with marine-grade tinned wire to ensure it can handle the harsh marine environment
